Cleveland, Ohio gets a bad rap. It’s a city that most people rarely think about, and is probably not on many bucket lists. Much maligned, it has a reputation as a crime ridden city on a polluted lake, with little to offer in the 21st century. While some of these things have a basis in reality, much of the information is outdated. I was pleasantly surprised to find a clean downtown, a lovely lake, and absolutely amazing architecture. Affordable rents have attracted independent restaurants and bars, filling interesting spaces that had been empty for decades. Adaptive reuse is everywhere, including a gourmet grocery store in a grand old bank, and a cocktail lounge inside a massive bank vault. So while the city may no longer be an industrial giant, it’s far from dead, and makes for a great sunny summer weekend destination.
