Tabacón Thermal Resort & Spa- La Fortuna, Costa Rica
Tabacón Thermal Resort is an absolute dream. Like a trip to Fantasy Island, sans seaplane and Mr. Rourke (and supernatural scenarios). It’s the embodiment of every tropical vacation you have ever longed for (minus the beach), and its memory will carry you through even the coldest of future winters.
In the shadow of Arenal Volcano, the area of La Fortuna has no shortage of resorts and hot springs. It even has a crazy number of world class options, so you probably won’t go wrong with whatever hotel you choose. That being said, Tabacón is exceptional. The resort’s Honeymoon Suites come with a private plunge pool and direct views of the volcano, and the property is home to one of the finest hot springs complexes in the world. Really.
Located a short walk (or shorter shuttle ride) from the resort proper, the hot springs complex includes a spa, restaurant, and more than 20 thermal pools, ranging in temperature from 72 to 105 degrees Fahrenheit. Guests at the resort receive early entry to the springs, and also have exclusive access to an adults-only section, Shangri-La Gardens, which includes a bar, cabanas, loungers, and one of the most private thermal pools onsite.
The resort itself is smaller than some in the area, with only a few onsite dining venues. However, they do offer a private dining option (The Ephemeral Table) which you should book. Consisting of a six course menu with wine pairing, prepared in a rainforest bungalow by your own private chef, it’s an unforgettable experience. Tabacón is also only a short cab ride to downtown La Fortuna and its many restaurants, for those that crave variety.
While the Tabacón complex may be too busy for some, I would still recommend it for at least a few days. The resort itself is quiet, and the views are outstanding.
