The Brown Palace- Denver, CO

The Brown Palace, Denver’s second oldest hotel, is an absolute architectural dream.  In continuous operation since 1892, the hotel is every bit as luxurious and impressive today as it was the day it opened.

Named for its original owner, Henry Cordes Brown, the hotel was built on a triangular plot of land, using red granite and sandstone, in the Italian Renaissance style.  At 1.6 million, no expense was spared in the construction, which included an 8 story atrium lobby with stained glass skylight, ornate cast iron railings, and imported Mexican Onyx.

For lovers of all things retro, the Brown’s Ship Tavern is not to be missed. Located in the “bow” of the triangular building, it has been offering a nautical experience since 1934. The magnificent space is also functional- they serve a mean Manhattan and have a great Whisky selection.

The lobby, with its dark wood, Mexican Onyx, artisan well water fountain, and Florentine Arches still has a grand presence today. High tea service is still offered each afternoon, so if you are a fan of small sandwiches and scones, this is your place.

Lest you think this hotel is stuck in the past, it has recently undergone a 10.5 million dollar renovation, with beautiful results. New stone tile bathrooms, furniture, bedding, and a bee colony on the roof all prove that while the hotel is true to its roots, it is willing to stay with the times.
