Sagamore Pendry- Baltimore, MD

Sagamore Pendry is a fantastic boutique hotel located in a really interesting old building. A landmark in Fells Point for over a hundred years, the 1914 Beaux Arts beauty with the outstanding entrance arch once served as the immigrant processing station for Locust Point.

Over the years, the pier served many other purposes, including cargo storage, maritime radio station and community center with rooftop playground. In the 1990s, the pier acted as the police headquarters in The Wire’s precursor Homicide: Life on the Street

After sitting vacant for nearly two decades, the property underwent a $60 million renovation, and the erstwhile abandoned property emerged as an upscale hotel. The original portion of the building remains largely unchanged, and houses the restaurant and event space.

The new build guest rooms extend the length of the pier, each designed to feel like a captain’s berth. At the end of the pier, an infinity pool with magnificent harbor views. Keeping with theme, the pool bar is fashioned from a recycled shipping container.

The property is also home to an intimate whisky bar called The Cannon Room, located in a space designed to mimic the inside of a barrel, complete with a curved wood ceiling and staves. Set in the floor, under glass, sits one of three cannons excavated from the site during the rehab, tossed by Europeans in the 1700s to make more room for cargo on their ships. The other two reside at the pool.

Excellently executed, it’s a fabulous example of a reuse project. Located steps from the restaurants and bars of Fells Point, and a short water taxi  ride to the stadium, it’s also an excellent weekend escape.
